RENEW Facilitator Training

Developed by the University of New Hampshire, RENEW (Rehabilitation, Empowerment, Natural Supports, Education, and Work) is a unique application of the wraparound process designed for older, transition-aged youth, who are at the greatest risk of alternative placement and school dropout. RENEW focuses specifically on increasing effective school engagement, employment, post-secondary education and high school completion.  RENEW has shown success in reducing school dropout and school push out, while increasing high school participation and completion for students with emotional and behavioral challenges. (Malloy, Sundar, Hagner, Pieras, & Viet, 2010).

Who Should Participate:  


  • School personnel interested in becoming facilitators; 
  • Administrators, District/building based coaches, Tier 3 team members who want to be able to support the RENEW process, and school/community-based personnel intending on becoming RENEW facilitators.
  • Potential facilitators: counselors, social workers, school psychologists, behavior specialists, special education personnel, community partners

  • Tier 3 Team members: administrators, special education teachers, general education teachers, community partners, family representatives, etc.


Participants can expect to leave being able to:

  • Interpret data to determine which students are in need of the RENEW process. 
  • Engage youth in a futures planning process referred to as ‘mapping’
  • Support a youth in developing their own personalized team
  • Engage youth in planning for effective RENEW team meetings
  • Facilitate effective RENEW teams meetings
  • Understand the steps for designing a RENEW action plan with student to address needs across home, school, and community
  • Use strength-and needs-based data tools for decision-making and progress monitoring in all four Phases of RENEW
  • Action Plan next steps related to:  systems and data necessary to support RENEW,  initiating RENEW and education of staff
